Lefkada is the easiest charter base in Greece to reach and the most forgiving place to learn to sail in the Mediterranean. The island connects to the Greek mainland by a short floating bridge at its northern tip — no ferry, no flight to a small island airport, just drive across. Charter companies cluster around two bases: Lefkada Town marina at the bridge, and Nidri on the east coast, 20 kilometers south. Nidri is the more popular of the two, set against a backdrop of steep green mountains with Skorpios (once the private island of Aristotle Onassis, where he married Jackie Kennedy in 1968) visible directly across the channel. The quay at Nidri gets crowded on Saturday turnaround days, but the setting is spectacular.
The Ionian Sea here is a different ocean from the Aegean. The Meltemi does not reach this coast. Instead, the prevailing summer wind is a gentle northwesterly — the Maistro — that builds to 8-15 knots after lunch and dies to a calm by evening. Force 6 days are rare. The water between Lefkada, the mainland, and Meganisi creates a sheltered inland sea where wave heights rarely exceed half a meter. This is why every charter company in Greece sends their newest, most nervous clients to Lefkada. It is also why the experienced sailors sometimes underestimate it — the west coast of Lefkada facing the open Ionian gets genuine ocean swell and gusty conditions around the headlands, especially at Cape Ducato (Cape Lefkatas) at the southern tip.
Meganisi, just 8 nautical miles south of Nidri, should be the first stop on any Lefkada charter. The harbor at Vathi is one of the world's largest natural harbors relative to the island's size, perfectly protected and with several good tavernas. Port Atheni on the west side of Meganisi is smaller, quieter, and equally charming. South of Meganisi, Kastos and Kalamos are two overlooked islands that feel genuinely remote despite being less than 15 miles from the charter base — each has a single village, a handful of tavernas, and empty beaches.
The longer passages go to the bigger Ionian islands. Ithaca (Vathi harbor, 15 nautical miles from Nidri) is atmospheric and literary — this is Odysseus' island, and the deeply indented harbor surrounded by wooded hills lives up to the mythology. Fiskardo at the northern tip of Kefalonia (20 nautical miles from Nidri) is the yachting hub of the Ionian — a Venetian-era harbor with upmarket restaurants, boutique shops, and stern-to berths that fill early in high season. Book ahead or arrive before lunch. Further south on Kefalonia, Sami and Agia Efimia offer cheaper moorings and a more local atmosphere.
Vliho Bay, on Lefkada's east coast between Nidri and the southern tip, is a vast natural anchorage so well-protected that it serves as a hurricane hole. The Vliho Yacht Club operates here and provides local knowledge, weather briefings, and social events. Provisioning in Lefkada Town and Nidri is excellent — both have supermarkets, butchers, bakeries, and fresh produce stands. Water is more available here than in the Aegean, and fuel docks operate at both Lefkada marina and Nidri quay. For sailors who want gentle winds, short passages, clear water, and taverna-grade Greek food without the Meltemi anxiety, Lefkada delivers all of it.
