The Tyrrhenian Sea along the western coast — Sardinia, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, and the Tuscan archipelago — has the lion's share of charter activity. The Adriatic side is shallower and flatter, more suited to motor cruising and the unique experience of navigating the Venice lagoon. And down south, the Aeolian Islands off Sicily's northeast corner offer volcanic landscapes and a rawness you will not find elsewhere in Italy.
Sardinia's northeast — the Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena archipelago — concentrates most of the bareboat fleet. Porto Cervo is the superyacht epicenter, but the seven islands of La Maddalena National Park, with their pink granite shores and Caribbean-grade water clarity, are accessible to any charter budget. The Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica is just 7 nautical miles wide but deserves respect: the Mistral funnels through and can produce seas well out of proportion to the forecast. Give it a morning passage when conditions are calmest. The Tuscan archipelago — Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo (landing restricted) — offers rewarding sailing from Piombino or Porto Santo Stefano with passages of 12-25 nautical miles between islands.
The Amalfi Coast from Sorrento to Salerno is one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in the world, but it is a challenging sailing ground. The coast is steep-to with very few natural harbors, anchorages are deep and often rolly, and the summer tourist traffic from day-trip boats is intense. Capri and Ischia make good overnight stops, and the marina at Amalfi town itself has limited berths that fill early. Experienced crews love this area; first-timers may find it stressful. The Aeolian Islands — Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi — sit 12-30 nautical miles north of Sicily. Stromboli's volcano erupts every 15-20 minutes and seeing it glow orange at night from anchorage is one of the Mediterranean's most memorable sailing moments. Lipari has the best marina and provisioning; the outer islands of Filicudi and Alicudi feel genuinely remote.
Wind patterns across Italy are dominated by the Mistral (northwest, strongest in the Sardinia-Corsica channel), the Scirocco (hot southeast wind from North Africa), and local thermal breezes that build predictably each afternoon along the coast. Summer sailing temperatures reach 30-35°C ashore, with water at 24-27°C. The season runs May through October, with July-August peak pricing and the best availability in June and September.
Italian marinas range from world-class facilities at Porto Cervo, Capri's Marina Grande, and Marina di Portisco to rustic fishing harbors where you raft alongside working boats and buy your dinner from the morning catch. Provisioning is exceptional everywhere. Every port town has a fresh market, a bakery worth lingering in, and a wine shop where the owner has opinions. Distances between Italian sailing regions are longer than in Greece or Croatia — Rome to Sardinia is 150 nautical miles — so most charters focus on one area per trip. Pick a region, slow down, eat well. That is sailing in Italy.
