France divides into two entirely separate charter worlds: the Mediterranean coast and the inland waterway network. On the Med side, the Cote d'Azur from Menton to Saint-Tropez packs over 30 ports into 50 nautical miles of coastline. Port Vauban in Antibes, Port Canto in Cannes, and the harbors of Saint-Tropez and Villefranche are all within a day's sail of each other. The scenery is iconic — red porphyry cliffs of the Esterel massif, the perfume of umbrella pines, turquoise water over white sand — but high-season berthing is expensive (expect 100-300 EUR per night for a 12-meter yacht) and anchorages fill by mid-morning in July and August. Night sailing along this coast is straightforward with good lighting and deep water close to shore.

Corsica sits 100 nautical miles south of the mainland and feels like a different country. The west coast from Calvi down through Porto and Cargese to Ajaccio has dramatic red granite cliffs and deserted anchorages backed by maquis-scented hillsides. Bonifacio at the southern tip is one of the most spectacular harbor entrances in the Mediterranean — a narrow slot through limestone cliffs into a sheltered inner harbor overlooked by the old citadel. The east coast is flatter and less interesting but useful for passage-making. Charter bases in Ajaccio, Calvi, Propriano, and Bonifacio all offer well-maintained fleets. Corsican ports are generally cheaper than the mainland Riviera.

The Atlantic coast from Brittany to the Basque Country is a different caliber of sailing. Tidal ranges reach 10 meters in Brittany, requiring serious passage planning and confidence with tidal gates and drying harbors. The reward is extraordinary: Belle-Ile, the Gulf of Morbihan, the Glenan archipelago, and the fjord-like Rade de Brest. This is sailing for experienced crews who enjoy a challenge.

France's standout charter experience is the canal network. The Canal du Midi — 240 kilometers of 17th-century engineering connecting Toulouse to the Mediterranean at Sete — is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the country's most popular boating holiday. No license or experience needed. The boats travel at walking pace (6-8 km/h), you operate the locks yourself (most are automated or assisted by lock-keepers), and the route passes through vineyards, sunflower fields, and medieval hilltop villages. Carcassonne's restored citadel, the nine-lock staircase at Fonseranes near Beziers, and the oyster producers on the Etang de Thau lagoon near Sete are highlights. The canal season runs April through November, with July-August being busiest — lock queues can stretch to 30 minutes.

The Mistral is the dominant wind on the Mediterranean coast: a strong northwesterly funneling down the Rhone valley that can blow 40+ knots for three or four days at a stretch. It produces clear skies and excellent visibility but makes sailing west of Toulon genuinely difficult. East of Toulon, the coast is more sheltered. Water temperature on the Med reaches 23-26°C in summer. Provisioning in France barely needs mentioning — the markets, fromageries, and boulangeries are half the reason people charter here.
