Sardinia is the Mediterranean's second-largest island and arguably its most beautiful sailing ground. The northeast corner — Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena archipelago — concentrates most charter activity, but the island's 1.850 kilometers of coastline offer rewards in every direction for those willing to venture beyond the obvious.

The La Maddalena archipelago is the crown jewel. Seven main islands (Maddalena, Caprera, Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria, Santo Stefano) now form a national park, and the sailing among them is some of the finest in the Mediterranean. Pink granite shores, clear water that looks photoshopped but is real, and coves accessible only by boat. Budelli's Spiaggia Rosa — a beach colored pink by fragments of Miriapora coral — is one of the most photographed spots in Italy, though landing is restricted to protect the ecosystem. Anchor offshore and take it in from the water. Cala Corsara on Spargi and Cala Santa Maria on the island of the same name are excellent anchorages with sand bottoms in 3-5 meters.

Charter bases cluster in the northeast: Portisco, Cannigione, Palau (the ferry port for Maddalena, with a marina and fuel), and Olbia (the main airport, with several marinas in the Olbia gulf). Porto Cervo, developed by the Aga Khan in the 1960s, remains the glamour capital — the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda hosts international regattas including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup each September. You do not need a superyacht budget to sail here, but berthing at Porto Cervo's marina reflects its clientele. The anchorages in the bays along the Costa Smeralda coast — Cala di Volpe, Liscia di Vacca, Cala Granu — are free and often more pleasant than the crowded marinas.

Beyond the northeast, Sardinia offers dramatically different sailing regions. The east coast from Olbia south toward the Gulf of Orosei features Tavolara island (an enormous limestone slab rising 565 meters from the sea), the protected marine area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo, and the Gulf of Orosei itself — a stretch of coast with towering limestone cliffs, sea caves (Grotta del Bue Marino, once home to monk seals), and white-sand beaches (Cala Luna, Cala Golorize) accessible only by boat or demanding hike. This stretch is 30-40 nautical miles south of Olbia and makes a rewarding multi-day passage.

The west coast around Alghero has a Catalan-influenced old town (Sardinia was ruled by the Crown of Aragon, and Catalan is still spoken by some locals), the dramatic Capo Caccia cliffs, and the Neptune's Grotto sea cave at their base. The southwest (Cagliari, Sant'Antioco, Carloforte on San Pietro island) is the least-charted territory for tourists and offers authentic Sardinian life — tuna fishing traditions, tabarchino dialect from Ligurian settlers, and the remarkable basalt cliffs of the Sulcis coast.

The Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica is the critical passage. Just 7 nautical miles at its narrowest, the strait funnels the Mistral into accelerated winds that can produce short, steep seas well out of proportion to the open-water forecast. Passages should be planned for early morning when conditions are calmest. In moderate Mistral conditions (15-20 knots), the strait is manageable for experienced crews; in strong Mistral (25+ knots), it becomes genuinely dangerous. Once across, Bonifacio's spectacular limestone harbor and Corsica's wild south coast are exceptional sailing.

The season runs May through October. July and August bring temperatures above 35°C, water at 25-27°C, and crowded anchorages — the La Maddalena archipelago in particular fills with Italian holiday boats in Ferragosto week (mid-August). June and September are the best months: warm, uncrowded, and with enough wind for good sailing. Provisioning in Sardinia is excellent. Local specialties worth seeking out: bottarga (cured mullet roe), pane carasau (paper-thin flatbread), pecorino sardo cheese, and Cannonau wine — the island's signature red, robust enough to match the local cuisine.
