Corfu anchors the northern end of the Ionian island chain, sitting closer to Albania and Italy than to Athens. The island is greener and wetter than anything further south in Greece — cypress trees, olive groves, Venetian-era architecture, and a lushness that feels more like the Dalmatian coast than the dry Cyclades. The main charter base is Gouvia Marina, officially D-Marin Gouvia, located 6 kilometers north of Corfu Town. It is a full-service facility with 1.200 berths, fuel, water, electricity, a boatyard, chandlery, restaurants, and a mini-market. The marina is modern and well-maintained, though stern-to berthing in crosswinds at peak season tests even experienced skippers.
Corfu Town itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and worth a full day ashore. The old Venetian fortress, the Liston arcade (modeled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris), and the network of narrow streets — the "kantounia" — running between tall buildings are unlike anywhere else in Greece. The old port offers alongside berthing for an overnight stay within walking distance of the town, though it is exposed to northerlies and not suitable in strong wind.
The classic southbound route from Corfu heads to Paxos, 30 nautical miles south. Paxos is small (11 kilometers long), covered in ancient olive trees, and ringed by sea caves along the dramatic west coast cliffs. Gaios, the main harbor, is tucked behind a small offshore island that creates a perfectly protected inner anchorage. Lakka and Longos, the other two harbors, are smaller and even more charming. Antipaxos, 3 nautical miles south of Paxos, is barely inhabited but has Voutoumi beach — a crescent of fine white sand with turquoise water that consistently ranks among the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Anchor off the beach (it is too shallow for stern-to) and swim in. From Paxos, the route continues south to Preveza and Lefkada, connecting the northern and central Ionian circuits.
The northbound option is less traveled and arguably more interesting. The Albanian Riviera sits just 7 nautical miles across the strait from Corfu's northeast coast — Saranda, Ksamil, and the ancient ruins of Butrint are accessible as day trips. Albanian coastal waters are uncrowded, the scenery is dramatic, and the experience is genuinely different from mainstream Mediterranean sailing. Check-in formalities at Saranda are straightforward. Northwest from Corfu, the Diapontia Islands (Othonoi, Erikoussa, Mathraki) are Greece's westernmost inhabited islands, rarely visited by charter boats and offering solitude that feels earned.
Wind conditions around Corfu are the gentlest in Greece. The Meltemi is weak here, building to a moderate 10-15 knot afternoon breeze and typically dying before dark. The channel between Corfu and the mainland is well-protected. Open-water passages — the crossing to Paxos, the run north to the Diapontia Islands — see more wind but rarely anything intimidating in summer. Spring sailing around Corfu, from April through May, is particularly rewarding: wildflowers cover the hillsides, the harbors are empty, water temperature is already swimmable at 20-22°C, and the light has a soft quality that disappears in the harsh brightness of July. Provisioning at Gouvia marina and in Corfu Town covers all needs. The island produces excellent olive oil, kumquat liqueur (a local specialty), and ginger beer — a legacy of British rule.
