Sibenik-Knin County contains what many experienced Adriatic sailors consider the most dramatic sailing landscape in the Mediterranean: the Kornati archipelago. Eighty-nine islands and islets — bare white limestone with almost no vegetation, separated by narrow turquoise channels — form one of the densest island groups in Europe. Kornati National Park covers 89 square kilometers of sea and land, and sailing through it feels like crossing a different planet. The park charges a daily entrance fee (paid online in advance or at the ACI Marina Piskera inside the park), and anchoring is permitted only in designated bays — but the crystal-clear water, the complete absence of development, and the silence make it worth the administrative effort.
The main charter bases serving the Kornati area are Sibenik itself, Rogoznica (20 kilometers southeast), Murter (the closest island to Kornati, connected to the mainland by a bridge), and Vodice. Marina Frapa in Rogoznica is consistently rated among the best marinas in Croatia — modern pontoons, excellent maintenance facilities, a hotel, pool, and restaurants. The marina fills in high season, so book ahead for July-August departures. ACI Marina Jezera on Murter puts you closest to the Kornati entrance. D-Marin Mandalina in Sibenik, opened in 2019, is the newest full-service facility in the area.
Entering Sibenik through the St. Anthony Channel is one of the most memorable arrivals in the Adriatic. The fortified channel narrows to 130 meters between limestone cliffs crowned by the 16th-century St. Nicholas Fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017), opening into the harbor beneath the cathedral of St. James — another UNESCO site, and the largest cathedral in the world built entirely of stone without using brick or wood supports. Sibenik's city market, directly on the waterfront, is excellent for provisioning: fresh fish from the morning catch, local cheese, olive oil, and seasonal produce.
A classic week from Sibenik loops through Kornati's outer islands (Ravni Zakan, Levrnaka, Piskera with its ACI marina), dips into Telascica Nature Park at the southern end of Dugi Otok (where 160-meter cliffs drop vertically into the sea and a landlocked salt lake — Mir — is warm enough to swim into November), then returns via the islands of Zut (ACI Marina Zut, excellent quiet anchorage), Zlarin (famous for coral), and Prvic (a car-free island with waterfront tavernas). Distances between anchorages are short — typically 5-10 nautical miles — making this an area for slow, exploratory sailing with a swim stop in every bay.
The inland excursion to Krka National Park is achievable by yacht: you can motor up the river to Skradin harbor (the furthest point accessible by yacht, with alongside berths and a floating pontoon), then take the park shuttle boat or walk 3.5 kilometers to Skradinski Buk — a staircase of 17 travertine waterfalls cascading over a 46-meter drop, with swimming allowed in the lake at the base. The Krka river passage from the coast to Skradin passes through a winding canyon and takes roughly 90 minutes at 5 knots — scenic and unusual for a sailing holiday.
Wind conditions in the Sibenik area follow the standard Dalmatian pattern: Maestral from the northwest building to 12-18 knots in the afternoon during summer, with Bora possible in transitional seasons. Inside the Kornati archipelago, the islands create their own microclimate — wind funnels between narrow channels and can be stronger or lighter than open water depending on direction. A good pilot book with anchorage-level detail is essential here.
