Turkey's southwest coast from the Bodrum peninsula to Antalya — the Turkish Riviera — is one of the Mediterranean's most complete sailing destinations. The coastline is deeply indented with pine-forested peninsulas, sheltered bays accessible only by water, and Lycian rock tombs carved into cliffs that you sail directly beneath. The tradition of cruising this coast goes back to the 1940s, when the writer Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli (the "Fisherman of Halicarnassus") began taking friends on wooden boats through the Gulf of Gokova. He called it "Mavi Yolculuk" — Blue Voyage — and that phrase still defines the experience today.
The sailing season runs April through November, with September being the consensus best month: water at its warmest (25-27°C), the Meltemi calming to manageable afternoon breezes of 10-15 knots, thinning crowds, and all the restaurants still open. July and August deliver consistent northwest Meltemi at 15-25 knots, stronger on Bodrum's exposed north shore where the wind comes straight across the Aegean. The Gulf of Gokova, the Gulf of Hisaronu, and the stretch from Gocek to Fethiye are more sheltered, with shorter fetch and lighter afternoon winds — better choices for less experienced crews.
Four charter bases dominate: Bodrum, Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye. Bodrum has the castle-dominated harbor, the nightlife, and direct Aegean access. Marmaris sits at the head of a deep natural bay with Netsel Marina's 750 berths and easy day-trips to Rhodes (10 nautical miles to the Greek border). Gocek is the calmest base — its bay so well-protected that it rarely sees waves — and D-Marin Gocek is widely regarded as one of Turkey's finest marinas with six facilities in the area. Fethiye combines a working waterfront town with access to the famous "12 Islands" cruising ground, where Kizil Ada, Tersane Ada, and Yassica islands sit 3-5 nautical miles apart in gin-clear water. Oludeniz's Blue Lagoon, visible from the sea but too shallow for keel boats, is a stunning visual landmark from offshore.
The gulet is Turkey's defining contribution to charter. These traditional wooden motor-sailers, built in the boatyards of Bodrum, Bozburun, and Marmaris, range from 18 to 45 meters and come with full crew — captain, cook, and deckhands. A week aboard a gulet, anchoring in a different bay each night, swimming off the stern platform, eating meals prepared from morning market ingredients — this is the Blue Voyage as Cevat Sakir imagined it. Charter prices for crewed gulets are significantly lower than equivalent crewed yacht charters in Greece or Croatia, and the food aboard is typically outstanding.
Provisioning costs in Turkey run 30-40% lower than Greece. Marina fees are competitive. The coast is dotted with simple waterfront restaurants where fishing boats supply the kitchen directly. Lycian ruins at Kaunos, Telmessos, Knidos, and Patara are reachable by dinghy or short walk from anchorage. For bareboat sailors, Turkish charts are adequate and the coast is well-lit for night approaches, though some smaller bays lack charted detail and a good pilot book (Rod Heikell's "Turkish Waters and Cyprus Pilot" is the standard reference) is essential.
