Fethiye and the neighbouring Gulf of Gocek form the most sheltered, beginner-friendly cruising ground on Turkey's Turquoise Coast — and one of the country's great blue-cruise heartlands. The character here is split beautifully between two traditions: crewed gulets running the classic Mugla "blue voyage", and bareboat or skippered sailing yachts and catamarans for those who want the helm themselves. Most charters embark from Ece Marina (Ece Saray) in Fethiye, roughly a 1.5-hour sail from Gocek's first coves, or from the Gocek marina cluster — D-Marin Gocek, Turkey's safest natural harbour with around 380 sea berths for yachts up to 70m, the boutique Skopea Marina (Turkey's first private marina, founded 1989), Club Marina, and the Marinturk Village Port and Exclusive bases. Cabin charters, flotillas and day trips round out the fleet.
The cruising ground is a tight, island-studded playground. The Gocek Twelve Islands — Tersane, Gocek, the Yassica (Flat) Islands, Domuz, Kizil (Red) and Rabbit — shelter a string of legendary anchorages: Bedri Rahmi Bay, Sarsala, Boynuzbuku, Aquarium Bay, Cleopatra's Bath, Gobun and Ruin (Manastir) Bay. East into the Gulf of Fethiye lie Tomb Bay (Tasyaka) with its Lycian rock tombs, Wall Bay, Cold Water Bay, Kapi Creek, and Gemiler Island with its St Nicholas ruins, with Butterfly Valley and Oludeniz just offshore. A realistic 7-night loop from Gocek runs to Sarsala, the Twelve Islands, Tomb Bay, Cold Water Bay, Gemiler, Kapi Creek and back via the Yassica Islands — averaging only ~13 nm a day in short, easy hops.
The prevailing summer wind is the Meltemi, a north-westerly, but it is heavily moderated inside the gulf. The Twelve Islands act as natural windbreaks and the mainland mountains block the strongest northerlies, so the inner waters typically see a pleasant Force 2-4: calm mornings, a sea breeze building from late morning and peaking in the afternoon around 10-20 knots. This makes Fethiye-Gocek a genuine Level 1-2 destination — ideal for first-time bareboaters. The rule is simple: sail in the morning, moor by early afternoon. Only the open water toward the Rhodes channel and the Aegean turns breezier and is better left to experienced crews.
The season runs roughly from April-May to October. July and August are the hottest and busiest; June, September and October are often the connoisseur's pick, with warm seas and thinner crowds. The water sits near 24C in June, climbs to 26-27C in July-August (peaks reach 28C+), and holds around 24-25C into September — comfortable swimming right across the season.
Provisioning is straightforward from Fethiye and Gocek before you slip the lines. Bareboat charter requires the skipper to hold an RYA Day Skipper certificate or an ICC; if you don't sail, a skippered yacht or a fully crewed gulet is easy to arrange. One important note: Fethiye-Gocek is a Special Environmental Protection Area, and a mandatory mooring-buoy system now covers the main bays to protect the Posidonia seagrass, with buoys reserved in advance through a mobile app and strict holding-tank waste rules under the digital DAU (Maritime Waste Application) system — confirm current fees and compliance with your operator before departure. Then it is yours: still water at anchor, pine-clad islands, and a different empty cove each evening.
