Göcek is the prestigious, protected gulf base of the Turkish Blue Cruise (mavi tur), and the spiritual heart of Turkey's gulet-chartering tradition. Tucked into the Gulf of Fethiye in Muğla, southwest Turkey, it sits just 22km — about a 20-25 minute drive — from Dalaman International Airport, making it one of the country's most convenient fly-in charter hubs. The character here is unmistakably premium and crewed: traditional wooden gulets sailing all-inclusive blue-cruise itineraries dominate the market, alongside bareboat and skippered sailing yachts, an increasingly popular catamaran fleet, and per-cabin cabin charters for solo travellers and couples. Most charters begin at one of several marinas — D-Marin Göcek is the largest, with 380 sea berths plus 150 dry berths and full facilities for yachts up to around 70m; Skopea Marina, founded in 1989 as Turkey's first private marina, is the intimate boutique base in the heart of town; Club Marina, Marinturk Göcek Village Port and the megayacht-focused Marinturk Göcek Exclusive complete the picture, with Fethiye's Ece Marina a popular alternate start or finish point.

The cruising ground is Skopea Limanı — the sheltered gulf and its Twelve Islands (Göcek Adaları), where mirror-flat, pine-fringed anchorages lie minutes apart. Tersane is the largest island, with a ruined village abandoned after the 1923 population exchange and the remains of an Ottoman-era shipyard; Yassıca's low islets offer shallow turquoise swim spots, while Göcek and Zeytinli islands ring the inner gulf. Famous bays include Bedri Rahmi (with its painted-fish rock by the artist Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu), Sarsala, and Manastır (Cleopatra's Bath, named for the sunken ruins on its seabed). A classic week runs east into Fethiye Gulf — Tomb Bay with its Lycian rock tombs, Wall Bay — then on to Fethiye town and the open coast to Ölüdeniz and Butterfly Valley. A relaxed alternative simply island-hops inside the gulf without an overnight passage.

The water inside the gulf is exceptionally calm, making this one of Turkey's most beginner-friendly grounds. Mornings are typically near-windless; a thermal sea breeze — a local extension of the Aegean Meltemi — builds off Babadağ around midday, averaging 15-20 knots through the afternoon and gusting 20-25 knots by mid-afternoon in high summer. The mountains funnel and gust the wind in west-facing coves, but with anchorages minutes apart you are never far from shelter, and the Meltemi is far more moderated here than in the open Aegean. Note a 6-knot speed limit applies throughout the protected gulf.

The season runs April to October, with the core May to October. Shoulder months — May-June and September-October — bring milder air, fewer crowds and the steadiest sailing breezes; July and August are hottest and busiest, with air temperatures of 28-34°C. Sea temperatures climb from around 24°C in June to a peak near 28°C in August, staying comfortable well into October.

Provisioning is easy in town, and Dalaman's proximity makes transfers painless. Bareboat charters require a recognised qualification; if you do not sail, a professional skipper or a crewed gulet is straightforward to arrange. One planning note: the entire gulf is a Special Environmental Protection Area, and from 2026 paid fixed mooring buoys are replacing free anchoring in the prime bays — fees, plus the Turkish Transit Log, typically sit outside the quoted charter price. Few bases combine this much shelter, prestige and beauty so close to an airport.
