Bodrum is Turkey's most established yacht charter base and the spiritual home of the gulet — the broad-beamed wooden motor-sailer that defines the Turkish "blue cruise" (mavi tur). Set on a peninsula where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, Bodrum pairs a deep charter fleet — crewed gulets, bareboat sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts — with some of the best-protected cruising grounds in the eastern Mediterranean. Most charters begin at Milta Bodrum Marina in the town centre, beneath the 15th-century Castle of St. Peter, or at the superyacht-grade Yalıkavak Marina (D-Marin) on the peninsula's north-west tip.
Two great gulfs shape the sailing. To the south lies the Gulf of Gökova, a long, mountain-fringed bay rated among the most beautiful cruising areas in the world: Sedir (Cleopatra) Island with its legendary golden-sand beach, English Harbour (Değirmen Bükü), the Seven Islands (Yedi Adalar) and Longoz are classic overnight stops, most reachable in short two-to-three-hour hops. To the west, the Gulf of Hisarönü and the Datça peninsula lead toward the ancient ruins of Knidos at Cape Krio. The Greek Dodecanese are a popular addition — Kos lies barely four nautical miles away, with Symi and Rhodes within reach — though crossing requires a crew list and clearing in and out at an official port of entry.
Summer wind is dominated by the Meltemi, a north-westerly that builds through the afternoon to 15-25 knots in July and August and eases overnight; mornings are usually calm. Gökova has its own thermal breeze, the İmbat, that funnels reliably down the gulf each afternoon — superb for sailing, but it rewards an early start and a sheltered anchorage by mid-afternoon. Because the gulfs are so well protected, the water stays flat even when the wind is up, which makes Bodrum forgiving for less-experienced crews while still satisfying skilled sailors.
The season runs from late April to the end of October. July and August are hot (sea temperatures of 25-27°C) and busy, with the strongest Meltemi; May-June and September-October are the connoisseur's choice — water still warm at 23-25°C, anchorages quiet, and the light softer. A classic week is the Gökova loop, while shorter trips and daily tours (günübirlik) from Bodrum and Yalıkavak suit travellers without a full week to spare.
Provisioning is easy: supermarkets and chandlers cluster around both marinas, and the morning markets in Bodrum and Turgutreis are excellent for produce, olives and cheese. Crewed gulets include a cook, so meals — grilled sea bass, meze and local Aegean wine — arrive on deck while you swim off the stern. Bareboat charters require the skipper to hold a recognised sailing qualification (ICC or equivalent) and a VHF certificate; if you do not sail, hiring a professional skipper or booking a crewed gulet is straightforward and popular. Whichever you choose, the rhythm is the same: swim before breakfast, sail the afternoon breeze, drop anchor in a pine-backed cove, and watch the Aegean turn copper at dusk.
