The fleet is deep and the bases are excellent. Palma de Mallorca is the hub, home to Marina Naviera Balear and the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the principal departure point for bareboats and catamarans. Just southwest, Port Adriano, Puerto Portals and the upscale Port d'Andratx serve motor, sailing and luxury charters, while Portocolom and Puerto Pollença act as secondary bases on the east and north coasts. Ibiza Town's Marina Botafoch anchors the Pitiusas and the Formentera run; Menorca charters depart from Port de Maó (Mahón) and Ciutadella.
Cruising centres on the four islands — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera — plus the Cabrera and Sa Dragonera marine reserves. A classic week-long Palma loop runs Palma to Santa Ponsa or El Toro (~14nm), on to Es Trenc, then a permit-only overnight on a buoy at Cabrera National Park (a ~10–12nm hop south of Mallorca), down to Porto Petro and Cala Mondragó, into Porto Colom, and back west to Palma bay. Highlights include Mallorca's southwest calas, the sandy Es Trenc and Es Carbó anchorages, and the rugged Tramuntana NW coast for advanced crews. Hopping to Ibiza adds a ~60nm open crossing of roughly ten to twelve hours, opening Formentera's turquoise shallows at Illetes and Espalmador and Ibiza's Cala Bassa and Cala d'Hort.
The summer wind is the Embat, a reliable thermal sea breeze running April to October. It starts calm around 10:00 at about 3 knots, builds to 12–16 knots (Force 3–4) by mid-afternoon, then eases by evening — strongest across the Bay of Palma, Pollença and Alcúdia. This makes June to August genuinely beginner-friendly: calm morning departures, pleasant afternoon sailing, settled nights at anchor. The cold, strong Tramuntana from the north is the main hazard but mostly occurs October to April, hitting the exposed NW Mallorca coast hardest. Difficulty steps up on inter-island passages and along the Tramuntana coast — intermediate territory.
The season runs May to October. July and August are warmest, busiest and most expensive, with sea temperatures of 24–27°C. May–June and September are the best-balance months: steadier mild breezes of roughly 5–15 knots, fewer crowds and excellent sailing weather. Water sits near 16–19°C in May, around 20–22°C in June, and 22–23°C in September before cooling through October — shoulder months are cooler for swimming but superb under sail.
Provisioning is easy from Palma and the marina towns. Bareboat charters require the skipper to hold a recognised qualification (ICC or equivalent); if you do not sail, a crewed or skippered yacht is straightforward. Two rules are non-negotiable: anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is banned Balearics-wide, with fines reaching €450,000 and a surveillance service on VHF Ch 68 — drop only on clear sand. And Cabrera requires an advance permit and online buoy reservation, with one-night-only stays in July and August. Picture a settled morning at anchor off Espalmador, the chain bright on white sand, Formentera shimmering ahead.
