Tuscany is one of the Tyrrhenian's most rewarding sailing grounds, where the charter character leans firmly toward relaxed island-hopping under sail — bareboat and crewed monohulls, catamarans and motor yachts, all within easy reach of one of the great protected cruising areas in the Mediterranean. The natural main base is Marina di Scarlino on the Gulf of Follonica, rightly counted among the best-protected marinas in the Med and only a few miles from the archipelago. Just north, Marina di Punta Ala is the stylish, exclusive alternative with the same direct access. Further south, Porto Santo Stefano, Cala Galera and Porto Ercole on Monte Argentario open up Giglio and Giannutri, while Marina di Pisa, Cala de' Medici at Castiglioncello, and the Piombino-area marinas (San Vincenzo, Marina di Salivoli) serve the northern and central coast and the ferry gateway to Elba.
The cruising ground is the Tuscan Archipelago National Park — the largest protected marine park in Europe, with seven main islands. A classic seven-day loop from Scarlino or Punta Ala runs out to Elba first (Portoferraio or Porto Azzurro), then a day exploring its bays — Golfo Stella, Fetovaia, Cavoli, Sant'Andrea — before pushing on to wild, volcanic Capraia and its Cala della Mortola. From there it's a day visit to flat, turquoise Pianosa, then south to Giglio (Giglio Porto, Campese) viewing restricted Montecristo from afar, on to Giannutri's Roman villa and Cala Spalmatoio, and home along the mainland. Distances are moderate — Scarlino to Elba is roughly 15-25 nm — making for genuinely relaxed hops, with longer passages to Capraia or Corsica reserved for stronger crews.
The defining summer wind is the Maestrale, a northwesterly that delivers fast, dry, clear-sky sailing and can build to demanding strength — when it pipes up, boats shelter on Elba's southern shore. The warm, humid Scirocco arrives from the southeast, sometimes hazy with Saharan dust, while the Libeccio and Ponente raise heavy western seas mainly in late autumn and winter. In season the wind usually settles into an optimal Force 3-4. Coastal island-hopping in settled summer conditions suits beginners-to-intermediates; open passages and a fresh Maestrale push the demand to intermediate-to-advanced.
The season runs April to October, with the core charter window May to October. May-June and September bring mild weather and thinner crowds — the connoisseur's choice — while July and August are peak and busiest, with air temperatures of 25-32°C. The sea is warmest from late spring through early autumn: roughly 23-26°C at the height of summer and 19-22°C in the shoulder months, comfortable for swimming across most of the season.
Provisioning is straightforward at every base, with the harbour towns and island ports well stocked for restocking en route. Bareboat charters require a valid sailing license and logged experience; if you would rather not skipper, crewed and skippered yachts are readily available, and some operators offer cabin charters and week-long crewed cruises. Because the whole archipelago is a national park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, anchoring rules, mooring buoys and eco-fees vary by island and zone — Montecristo, Pianosa and Gorgona are strictly regulated — so always verify per-boat licensing and current Park Management rules before you cast off into these protected, crystalline waters.
