Alghero is the principal yacht charter base on Sardinia's Riviera del Corallo — the Coral Riviera — and the natural launch point for cruising the rugged, dramatic north-west coast of the island. Most charters begin in the heart of the old town at Marina Aquatica, the west coast's main charter and yacht-services hub, with around 65 berths handling yachts up to 70 metres just ten minutes from Alghero-Fertilia airport. The adjacent Marina di Sant'Elmo shares the town harbour basin, sheltered behind Alghero's old-town walls. Up the coast, Marina di Stintino (some 300 berths beside La Pelosa beach) and Marina di Castelsardo (around 500 berths in the Gulf of Asinara) make excellent secondary bases, while Porto Torres and the Fertilia harbour round out the options. The fleet here spans bareboat and crewed sailing monohulls, catamarans such as the Lagoon 42, motor yachts, and licence-free dayboats and RIBs for shorter excursions.
The cruising is some of the Mediterranean's most striking. Right on Alghero's doorstep stands Capo Caccia, a towering limestone promontory hiding Neptune's Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno), a vast sea cave reached in a short hop. Just north lies Porto Conte, a large sheltered bay around 8 nm away, followed by the old mining cove of Cala dell'Argentiera on the west coast. A classic seven-day loop runs Alghero → Porto Conte → Cala dell'Argentiera → Stintino and La Pelosa's turquoise shallows → the restricted nature reserve of Asinara island → Porto Torres → Castelsardo, before returning or heading south to the river town of Bosa (around 19 nm). Experienced crews can push north-east toward the Strait of Bonifacio, La Maddalena and Corsica.
The dominant wind is the Maestrale (Mistral) from the north-west — it clears the sky and delivers fast, taut sailing, but can build to 30-plus knots, with the open west coast and the Strait of Bonifacio especially exposed and seas rising quickly. The Scirocco from the south-east is the other strong system. Sardinia rates as intermediate-plus: the rugged west coast offers few bolt-holes, and operators often cancel Capo Caccia and Asinara tours when the Mistral blows hard. Sheltered fallbacks are Porto Conte bay, Alghero town harbour, and the Gulf of Asinara ports.
The season runs May to October, peaking in July and August. June and September are the sweet spot — warm and calmer, with thinner crowds. High summer is hot and near-rainless, with air around 28-31°C and seas reaching 24-26°C by late summer; May and early October are milder, air in the low-to-mid 20s and seas around 18-22°C.
Provisioning and yacht services centre on Marina Aquatica, so book berths well ahead in peak season. Italian bareboat charter requires a valid nautical licence — the Italian Patente Nautica, an ICC, or a recognised EU equivalent — plus a VHF SRC radio certificate; the Sardinian Coast Guard is notably strict, and private-body certificates alone may not be accepted. If you do not hold the right papers, a skippered or fully crewed yacht is straightforward. Note that Asinara is a national park and marine protected area with zoned navigation and anchoring, so check current rules and book transits. Many charters here pair sailing with diving the deep caverns around Capo Caccia — and end the day in Alghero's Catalan-flavoured old town, the self-styled Barceloneta of Sardinia.
