The Aeolian Islands charter grounds off north-east Sicily are one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic volcanic cruising areas, and almost every charter here begins from the Messina coast around Milazzo. The principal base is Marina di Portorosa at Furnari, one of Sicily's largest marinas, with several hundred berths and full facilities — a strategic departure point for the archipelago. The town of Milazzo, roughly 10km away on its gateway peninsula, is a common embarkation point, while Capo d'Orlando Marina to the west serves as an alternative coastal base. Charter character leans toward bareboat and crewed sailing yachts and catamarans, with crewed motor yachts, by-the-cabin charters and luxury crewed options also available. Catania and Palermo airports, two to three hours by road, are the main access points.
The cruising is built around a single, world-class loop: the seven volcanic Aeolian Islands. From Portorosa or Milazzo, a classic 7-day route runs roughly 80 nautical miles — Vulcano first for its thermal mud baths, crater climb and the Porto di Levante anchorage, then Lipari, the largest island, with its town and Marina Lunga. Panarea, the chic and near-mandatory stop, offers the sheltered Cala Junco anchorage before the leg out to Stromboli. Stromboli itself is the prize: sail off the north-western Sciara del Fuoco toward sunset to watch the active volcano throw glowing lava. Salina, the green pearl, offers Santa Marina and the bay of Pollara, while wild Filicudi and Alicudi reward advanced crews willing to anchor in the open Tyrrhenian. The route returns via Lipari and Vulcano, with an optional extension down the Sicilian coast toward Taormina and the Strait of Messina.
The prevailing summer wind is the north-westerly Maestrale (Mistral), generally moderate and manageable on summer afternoons but rising to 15-25 knots and more frequent in autumn. The Scirocco from the south-east brings hot, humid, gusty bursts and occasional short-lived squalls, mainly in spring and autumn. This is intermediate-to-advanced sailing: winds are variable and locally strong in exposed inlets, the deep volcanic seabed makes anchoring tricky — especially at Stromboli and Alicudi — sheltered harbours are few, and the outer islands face open-sea fetch demanding genuine self-sufficiency. Beginners are well advised to hire a local skipper.
The season runs May to October. Peak July and August are the busiest, while the shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October are the sweet spot: warm but not blistering, more reliable moderate winds, fewer crowds and better marina availability. Summer air highs sit at 28-32°C. Sea temperatures climb from around 17-20°C in spring to 23-27°C at the height of summer, holding near 23-25°C through September before cooling to 20-23°C by November.
Provisioning is straightforward, with fuel, water and supplies at Lipari's Marina Lunga, Santa Marina Salina and Vulcano's Porto di Levante. Bareboat charter in Italy requires the skipper to hold a recognised coastal sailing certificate — the ICC is the most widely accepted, with RYA and ASA qualifications also recognised — and someone aboard must hold a VHF Short Range Certificate; if you do not sail, a skippered or crewed boat is easily arranged. Remember the Aeolians are a UNESCO World Heritage site with sensitive anchorages, so respect the protected areas. Bareboat from Portorosa runs indicatively from about £1,300 for 7 nights in low season to roughly £2,000 in summer. Few charters end without the memory of Stromboli's red glow against a Tyrrhenian night.
