Campania is Italy's premier crewed-charter coast — the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples in a single, sun-warmed cruising ground. This is not a bareboat wind-sailing region; it is a coastal-cruising and day-charter market built around crewed motor yachts, traditional wooden gozzi with a skipper, and crewed gulets for multi-day trips. Crewed sailing yachts, catamarans and per-cabin charters round out the fleet, while bareboat sail and catamaran options exist only as a secondary offering. The principal turnaround base is Marina di Stabia at Castellammare di Stabia — a full-service marina midway between Naples and Salerno, closest to Capri and the Amalfi Coast and able to host yachts up to around 100 metres. Naples (Mergellina, Marina Sud Cantieri), served by Capodichino airport, is the main embarkation hub, while Marina d'Arechi in Salerno is the eastern gateway toward Amalfi and the Cilento, with Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport close by.
The cruising heart is the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast, where the islands and headlands sit only a few nautical miles apart — so this is anchoring, day-tripping and short hops rather than passage sailing. A realistic seven-day loop from Naples or Marina di Stabia runs out to pastel-harboured Procida and Ischia, across to Capri for the Faraglioni, the Blue Grotto and Marina Piccola, then Nerano and Marina del Cantone and the Li Galli islets, on to Positano and the Fiordo di Furore, Amalfi and Atrani, and finally Sorrento before returning to base. Longer charters can reach the Cilento coast to the south or Ponza in the Pontine Islands.
The wind is a gentle thermal sea-breeze regime, not a strong-wind sailing ground. Mornings are calm under a light land breeze; a west-to-southwest sea breeze fills in late morning, around 12:30 to 14:00, typically blowing 10 to 18 knots and easing by sunset. Summer averages a pleasant 8 to 15 knots with few gusts and very few storms. The open water around Capri is the most exposed but stays manageable for less-experienced crews, and the Maestrale (NW) is only moderate here in summer — an easy, sheltered area suited to motor yachts and day boats.
The season runs from April to October, peaking June through September; May, June, September and October are the calmest and least crowded. Sea temperatures climb from around 17–19°C in spring to roughly 25–26°C in July and August (up to about 28°C in shallow bays) and stay swimmable into October. July and August are hot, busy and crowded at the peak, so the shoulder season is the rewarding time to charter.
Provisioning is straightforward from Naples, Salerno or Sorrento. If you want to take the helm yourself, the limited bareboat options require a recognised qualification (ICC or equivalent); but given the crewed character of this coast, a professional skipper or fully crewed boat is the natural choice. One point matters: the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, between Sorrento and Positano and covering Nerano and the Li Galli rocks, requires boats to use the equipped mooring-buoy fields (Nerano takes vessels up to 40m), bans anchoring on the posidonia seabed, and enforces speed limits (under 5 knots within 300m of the coast, under 10 beyond). Capri has its own restricted zones and the Blue Grotto is access-controlled, while peak-summer berths at Capri, Positano and Amalfi are scarce and costly, so most boats anchor or take a buoy and tender ashore.
