Ireland is genuine tidal Atlantic sailing — not the Mediterranean — and its charter heart is the South-West coast around Cork. The dominant character here is bareboat and skippered sailing yachts for experienced crews, typically 37-41 ft Beneteau-class monohulls; catamarans are rare. The primary charter base is Kinsale Yacht Club Marina in Co. Cork, roughly 20 km from Cork Airport, the main gateway for the south-west. Nearby, Crosshaven in Cork Harbour is home to the Royal Cork Yacht Club — widely held to be the oldest yacht club in the world — with full marina facilities, while Baltimore in West Cork is the day-charter and island-hopping base. Secondary bases reach further afield: Dingle Marina in Co. Kerry, Dun Laoghaire on Dublin Bay, Galway for the Wild Atlantic Way, Kilrush on the Shannon Estuary, and Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland.
The core cruising ground runs between Kinsale and the Dingle Peninsula — widely rated one of the best and safest small-boat grounds in the British Isles, rich with sheltered harbours and bolt-holes. A classic south-west itinerary of around 65 nm runs from Kinsale, rounding the Old Head of Kinsale to Courtmacsherry, on to Glandore Harbour (where the old pilots' rule is "Avoid Adam and hug Eve"), Castletownshend, Baltimore, then Cape Clear and the Fastnet Rock lighthouse before Schull and Crookhaven. From Baltimore, day-sail hops are short: Schull is about 10 nm, Crookhaven and Goleen about 14 nm, Glandore about 16 nm. A weekend cruise can run Baltimore to Mizen Head and overnight at Bere Island in Bantry Bay before returning via the Fastnet, Schull and Cape Clear.
This is tidal Atlantic sailing with prevailing south-westerlies. Conditions range from gentle breezes to 20+ knot strong breezes, with seas commonly 4-8 ft and rapid weather changes rolling in off the Atlantic; SW gales can reach 40+ mph even in the shoulder seasons. It rewards experienced crews: the tidal range of roughly 4-4.5 m demands care when anchoring, and strong currents and tidal races — Barloge Creek up to 9 knots, the Strangford Narrows up to 8 knots on springs — plus offshore rocks like Doolic Rock off Galley Head call for careful chart work. Met Éireann sea-area forecasts and proper passage planning are standard practice here.
The season runs May to September in a cooler Atlantic climate. Late May already brings around 16 hours of daylight, and mid-summer from June to August is the warmest and calmest window. August and September can turn wetter as the remnants of Atlantic tropical storms begin to track across, while winter brings stormy systems and is no charter season at all. Day and half-day trips run year-round from Baltimore, but bareboat cruising is realistically May to September.
Provisioning is straightforward at the Cork and West Cork bases, with Cork Airport the main access point for Kinsale, Crosshaven and Baltimore. Bareboat charter requires the skipper to hold an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or RYA Day Skipper (or equivalent national certificate); no licence is needed for skippered or crewed charters, and skippered trips can include RYA-style tuition. The fleet is smaller and mostly monohull sailing yachts — but for crews who can read a tide table, the run from Cork to Dingle, with the Fastnet on the horizon, is some of the finest sailing in the British Isles.
