The Northern Sporades are Greece's gentlest sailing ground — a tight cluster of pine-clad islands off the Magnesia coast that feels a world away from the wind-blasted Cyclades. This is relaxed, family-friendly cruising country, and bareboat monohulls are the dominant offering, with catamarans (bareboat and crewed) increasingly available alongside skippered yachts, by-the-cabin charters and a thriving flotilla scene. Most charters begin on Skiathos, the busiest bareboat and skippered base, served by fleets such as Istion, Kavas, SEVEN and Nautilus and blessed with its own airport for easy crew changeovers. The mainland city-port of Volos offers the broadest fleet — including catamarans and crewed yachts — with full fuel and water, while Loutraki on Skopelos and the small Milina/Pelion flotilla bases round out the options.
The cruising is wonderfully compact. The classic loop runs Skiathos to Skopelos (Loutraki or Glossa, about 15 nm / three hours), on to Alonissos and the Marine Park, then back to Skiathos. Skiathos itself offers Koukounaries and Maratha beaches, a cosmopolitan old town and the Tsougria islet anchorage opposite the harbour. Skopelos rewards with the emerald shelter of Panormos Bay, Stafylos and Agnontas, and the famous Mamma Mia chapel at Agios Ioannis. Alonissos and its port Patitiri are the gateway to Europe's largest marine park. Legs are short and forgiving — Skiathos to Alonissos is roughly 22 nm, Alonissos to Kyra Panagia about 18 nm, and Kyra Panagia to Skopelos around 23 nm. With a full week you can push south-east to Skyros for a more ambitious itinerary.
The prevailing summer wind is the northerly Meltemi, blowing from late May to late September and peaking in July and August. But the Sporades sit in a sheltered, pine-clad pocket of the NW Aegean, so the Meltemi arrives weaker here than in the exposed Cyclades — typically Force 4-5, though August can build to 6-7 in gaps and around headlands. It is easy-to-moderate sailing with reliable lee anchorages, ideal for couples and families. Be aware that channels and headlands accelerate the gusts, and the open NE stretches toward the Marine Park can throw up a short, steep chop. May-June and September-October bring the calmest, most relaxed conditions.
The season runs May to October, peaking from June to mid-September. The shoulder months of May/June and September/October deliver the calmest winds and best value. Sea temperatures climb from around 19-20°C in May to 23°C in June, stay warm through summer, and sit near 24°C in September — often the finest swimming month — before cooling but staying pleasant through October. Pack a layer for cooler evenings in May-June and September.
Provisioning is straightforward at Skiathos, Volos and Skopelos. Bareboat charters require a recognised skipper qualification (RYA, ICC or equivalent); if you don't sail, a skippered or fully crewed boat is easy to arrange. One key piece of planning: the National Marine Park requires an entry ticket — buy it in advance at alonissos-tickets.necca.gov.gr (reported at roughly €5.50 per person/day and €33.50 per vessel; verify current rates). All sailing is within Greek waters under standard TEPAI cruising-tax rules, so there are no borders to clear — just monk seals, ancient shipwrecks and the quietest anchorages in the Aegean.
