Preveza is the gateway to the South Ionian — the heartland of Greek bareboat sailing and the spiritual home of the family flotilla. Tucked at the mouth of the Amvrakikos Gulf in the southern Ionian, it pairs flat, sheltered water with an unusually deep self-skippered fleet. The dominant character here is bareboat: monohulls and catamarans set out crewless across short, protected legs. Most charters begin at Cleopatra Marina on the Aktio peninsula — the main charter base, with 85-plus wet berths, around 1,200 dry berths and the largest boatyard in Greece, home to fleets from Istion, Nautilia and SEVEN. The Preveza town quay offers an alternative embarkation berth (it fills fast in peak season), while Lefkada Marina, 45 minutes south, is the adjacent base often paired with a Preveza start.
The cruising ground is the sheltered inland sea of the South Ionian: Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca, Kefalonia, plus Paxos, Antipaxos and Parga to the north. A realistic one-week loop runs short and gentle — embark and provision at Cleopatra, then sail south to Sivota Bay on Lefkada. Day two takes you to Meganisi coves at Atherinos and Limonari; day three to Porto Kalamos and a snorkel at Episkopi; day four to Ithaca Kioni or Frikes; day five to Fiskardo on Kefalonia; then north via Sivota or Vliho Bay and a short hop home. Legs are typically 10-25 nautical miles, with safe anchorages and town quays everywhere. Crews wanting open water can run north to Parga, Paxos and Corfu.
The summer wind is the Maistros, a north-westerly thermal sea breeze. Mornings are calm; it builds gently around midday, peaks near 13:00 at Force 3-5 (roughly 10-20 knots) and dies by sunset. It is most reliable June to September, blowing almost daily from the NW; April-May runs lighter at Force 2-4, while October weakens and turns unpredictable. Combined with short fetch and flat, well-charted water, this makes Preveza one of the most beginner-, family- and learner-friendly sailing areas in the Mediterranean. Difficulty: easy.
The season runs April to October, with the best sailing May to September. Sea temperatures climb from around 16-19°C in spring to 24-26°C in July and August, easing to 23-25°C in September and cooling but still swimmable in October. July and August are hottest (air 25-35°C) and busiest, but deliver the most consistent afternoon Maistros. June and September are the sweet spot — warm water, reliable wind and fewer crowds.
Logistics are exceptionally easy: Aktion National Airport sits roughly 1.5 km from Cleopatra Marina, and the South Ionian is low-tide, low-current and densely served by tavernas and town quays. Bareboat charter requires the skipper to hold a valid offshore sailing licence accepted by Greek port authorities, plus a declared competent co-skipper; if that is not you, a skippered or crewed yacht is straightforward. Factor the Lefkada Canal bridge into your passage planning, as it opens only at set times through the day. Standard Greek cruising tax (eTEPAI) applies and is handled by the charter company, with no national-park crossing fees. The reward: a calm morning bay, an afternoon breeze on cue, and a taverna quay waiting at sunset.
