Paros sits in the heart of the central Cyclades and is one of the Aegean's most rewarding bareboat bases — a hub for confident sailors who want short hops, dramatic anchorages, and reliable summer wind. The dominant charter character here is bareboat sailing, with catamarans the most popular choice: the typical fleet boat is around 13 metres and sleeps about ten guests. Most charters begin at Paroikia (Parikia) port in Paros Town, roughly 25 minutes from Paros National Airport, where operators such as Istion Yachting and broker fleets (400+ yachts) base monohulls, catamarans, skippered and fully crewed yachts. Naoussa marina, a sheltered harbour fronting one of the prettiest Cycladic villages, serves as a secondary base, with Piso Livadi on the east coast and nearby Antiparos marina rounding out the options.
The cruising ground is the central Cyclades, with Paros as the natural pivot. Classic itineraries lean on short, Meltemi-aware legs: a seven-day loop runs Parikia to Naxos, on to Koufonisia, then Schinoussa or Iraklia in the Small Cyclades, back via Despotiko and Antiparos to Paros. An extended version reaches Donoussa and Amorgos. The Small Cyclades are chosen deliberately for brief hops and generous swim-and-anchor time. Standout stops include Naoussa Bay, the pink-rock coves of Kolymbithres, uninhabited and sheltered Despotiko, Antiparos town, and the turquoise beaches of Koufonisia. Sail the Paros-Naxos channel downwind with the northerly behind you — it gets rough head-on.
The defining wind is the summer Meltemi, a dry northerly that dominates the Aegean from May to September and peaks from mid-July to mid-August. Typical strength is Force 5-6 (20-25 knots), but it builds quickly to Force 7 and occasionally Force 8, with gusts of 30-40-plus knots funnelling through the narrow inter-island channels and the windsurf-famous Pounta strait between Paros and Antiparos — a world-class board-sports venue, not a place to moor. Combined with a short, steep Aegean swell, this makes the central Cyclades an advanced area best suited to experienced crews. Sail on a weak-Meltemi window, or take a professional skipper.
The season runs May to October. July and August are the hottest, busiest and windiest months; May-June and September-October deliver lighter, more comfortable winds and good shoulder-season value. Sea temperatures climb from roughly 18-20°C in May to about 23°C in July and 24-26°C in August, staying swimmable into October. Expect hot, dry, near-rainless summers and abundant sunshine throughout.
Provisioning is straightforward in Parikia and Naoussa before you slip lines. Greek bareboat rules (post-2019) require the skipper to hold a recognised practical certificate — RYA ICC, Coastal or Yachtmaster, ASA IPC or IYT; RYA Day Skipper alone is no longer accepted and must be upgraded to ICC. A second experienced adult is mandatory and signs a Declaration of Competence if unlicensed; certificate copies must reach the base around four weeks ahead, with originals shown to the Port Authority on arrival. Greece also levies the TEPAI cruising tax. Plan legs to run with the wind, keep daily hops short, and Paros rewards you with the Cyclades at their wildest and most blue.
