Sivota (Syvota) is one of the Ionian's most photographed harbours — a small, horseshoe-shaped bay tucked into the south coast of Lefkada, ringed with waterfront tavernas where crews tie up stern-to and step ashore for dinner. It is a marquee flotilla and bareboat overnight stop, not a large standalone charter base. The only charter dock physically in the bay is Cavo Yachting's "The Cove," a 60-metre private pontoon holding up to about a dozen monohulls or eight catamarans. The real fleets serving this cruising ground are based 10-15 nm north, at Lefkas (Lefkada Town) Marina — the largest marina in the Ionian and home to most major operators — and at Vlicho/Nidri, where companies like Sail Ionian run flotillas and bareboats. Nearly every "Sivota" charter actually departs from one of these hubs and overnights in the bay.
The cruising here is some of the most forgiving in the Mediterranean: short, protected hops between sheltered harbours, ideal for families and first-timers. From Sivota it is just 5-10 nm across the Lefkada/Meganisi channel to Meganisi (Vathi, Spartochori, Port Atheni), with Nidri, Tranquil Bay and Mikros Gialos close at hand. Push southeast to the quiet taverna anchorages of Kalamos and Kastos, or south 15-20 nm to Ithaca (Kioni, Vathi, Frikes) and 15-25 nm to Kefalonia (Fiskardo, Agia Eufimia, Sami). A classic week runs Lefkas/Vlicho to Sivota, Meganisi, Kastos or Kalamos, Ithaca, Fiskardo, then back via Sivota — rarely more than 25 nm in a day.
The wind is a predictable thermal regime. Mornings are calm; through the afternoon the northwesterly Maistro builds to roughly Force 3-5 (7-21 knots), enough for pleasant sailing, then eases by evening. One local caveat: that afternoon breeze funnels down the hills around Sivota, so the harbour entrance and mooring can turn gusty on arrival. The bay itself is well sheltered with good holding. Lefkada's exposed west coast is choppier than the protected eastern channels. Overall, this is genuinely easy sailing.
The season runs April to October, peaking June through September, with July and August the hottest and busiest. Water temperatures climb from around 19-22°C in spring and June to 24-26°C in July-August, holding near 23-25°C through September and still about 22°C into October — swimmable from June well into autumn. The shoulder months of May and late September-October bring thinner crowds and reliably lighter winds.
Provisioning is straightforward from Lefkas or Nidri before you cast off, with smaller shops and tavernas in Sivota itself. Bareboat charter is the dominant choice, monohull or catamaran, but the skipper must hold a recognised qualification — an ICC or equivalent national certificate, typically with a second-crew declaration; note that an RYA Day Skipper alone has not been accepted by Greek port authorities since 2019, so send certificate copies to the base around four weeks ahead and carry the originals. The TEPAI cruising tax and DEKPA transit document are usually handled by the base. If you would rather not skipper, a skippered yacht or crewed catamaran is easy to arrange. Drop the hook in that muddy, well-holding bay, watch the tavernas light up at dusk, and you understand why every flotilla makes Sivota a night to remember.
