Kontokali sits on Corfu's sheltered east coast, just north of Corfu Town, and is the gateway to the Northern Ionian. Its heart is D-Marin Gouvia Marina — the largest marina in the Ionian and northwest Greece, with around 1,100 berths plus some 520 dry-dock spaces, open year-round and just 15 minutes from Corfu (CFU) airport. This is a serious charter hub: The Moorings, Istion Yachting, Dream Yacht Charter, Sun Yachting, Discovery Yachting and Ionian Catamarans all base bareboat, skippered, crewed and catamaran fleets here, and operators such as Nautilus Yachting run guided flotillas. The dominant character is relaxed, beginner-friendly bareboat sailing — calm, predictable conditions that make this one of the Mediterranean's easiest grounds for a first skipper.
The cruising ground is the Northern Ionian: Corfu's protected east coast, the green islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, and the mainland shore around Sivota (Mourtos), Parga and Igoumenitsa. A classic one-week round trip from Gouvia might run south to Petriti for a shakedown, across to Mourtos for the Blue Lagoon and Bella Vraka, on to hilltop Parga and its castle, then down to Lakka or Loggos on Paxos and Gaios, with a swim stop at Antipaxos and the turquoise Voutoumi and Vrika beaches, before heading back up Corfu's east coast via Kalami and Kouloura. Legs are short — roughly 20 to 30 nautical miles, easy day hops. Two-week charters can reach Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos.
The prevailing wind is the northwesterly Maistro, the Ionian's gentle cousin of the Mistral. It is a thermal sea breeze: light and calm (Force 1-2) in the morning, building to Force 3-4 — occasionally 5-6 — through the early afternoon, then fading in the evening. Late May to September is the steadiest. Because the wind blows from the northwest, Corfu's east coast and the channels behind Paxos stay flat and sheltered. Sailing here is easy and family-friendly; the main caveats are afternoon gusts around headlands and the exposed Paxos and Antipaxos crossings when the Maistro blows hard.
The season runs roughly April to October, with the reliable core from June to September. Water is too cold to swim early on — around 14-16°C in April and 18-20°C in May — then climbs to 24-25°C in June, peaks above 27°C in July and August, and eases to around 25°C in September before cooling through October. June to September is the best window for warm swimming and steady Maistro breezes, while May and October are the connoisseur's choice: pleasant sailing and fewer crowds, but cooler water.
Provisioning is straightforward, with a fuel station, supermarket, chandlers and restaurants right at Gouvia. On Paxos, many quays at Gaios and Lakka charge no mooring fee, though water and electricity are bought by card from nearby shops; popular bays fill early in July and August, so anchor or arrive ahead. Greek bareboat charters require an ICC or equivalent qualification plus a competent second crew member, so if you do not hold a licence a skippered or crewed yacht is easily arranged. Picture a flat morning sea off Kalami, the Maistro filling in by lunchtime, and a quiet evening below Parga's castle.
