Lavrio sits on the southeast tip of Attica, a short drive from Athens yet a world apart in sailing terms — it is the closest mainland charter base to the Cyclades, and that single fact defines its character. The dominant product here is bareboat sailing: monohulls and a strong catamaran fleet, chartered by qualified crews who want to point straight at the islands rather than grind up the Attica coast from Athens. Skippered and crewed charters are well represented too, a sensible choice given the strength of the local wind. Most fleets — Hermes Yachting, Hellenic Yachting, Istion, Archon and others — are based at Olympic Marina, the modern, Olympics-era base about 1.5 km from town, while the older Lavrio town marina offers a secondary waterfront option in the heart of the port.
The cruising ground is the Cyclades, and Lavrio's advantage is distance saved: Kea (Tzia) and Kythnos sit just three hours out, so you reach real islands on day one instead of motoring down the coast. A western line runs Kea (Korissia, Vourkari) to Kythnos — with the celebrated Kolona double-bay beach — then on to Serifos, Sifnos and Milos. The northern line links Syros (Ermoupoli), Mykonos, the UNESCO site of Delos, Tinos and Andros. A realistic seven-day loop of roughly 150-160 nautical miles runs Lavrio - Kea - Kythnos - Syros - Mykonos - Delos and Tinos - Andros, heading out west first and returning on a northerly. Cape Sounio, crowned by the Temple of Poseidon, makes a classic first or last night at anchor.
The defining force is the Meltemi, the northerly N-NW wind that blows notably stronger and more sustained here than in the Saronic Gulf. Expect a typical Force 4-5, regularly Force 6-7, and Force 7-8 at the July-August peak, with seas building to 2-3 metres among the islands. Open crossings — Kea or Kythnos across to Syros and Mykonos — are exposed and demand respect. This is intermediate-to-advanced sailing: experienced crews manage it, while less seasoned charterers are well advised to hire a skipper in high season. The shoulder months are altogether gentler.
The season runs April to October, peaking in July and August — exactly when the Meltemi is at its fiercest. The best balance of warm weather and manageable wind comes in late May, June, September and October, the connoisseur's window. Sea temperatures climb to around 25-27°C at the height of summer and run cooler in spring and autumn. High season buys you heat, long days and lively islands at the cost of strong wind and crowds; the shoulder season trades a little warmth for calmer passages and quieter harbours.
Provisioning is straightforward at Olympic Marina, with fuel delivered dockside by mobile truck and a deposit of around 25% typical at booking. Bareboat charter requires a valid skipper's licence plus a qualified co-skipper, or a signed Declaration of Honour for the co-skipper; since 2019 Greece no longer accepts a standalone RYA Day Skipper, so the ICC is the safe credential. The TEPAI cruising tax and the roughly €20 Delos entry are normally handled for you, and note that Delos allows no overnight mooring — visit by day, sleep at Mykonos. From the airport it is barely forty minutes by taxi to a boat already pointed at the islands.
