Zadar is northern Dalmatia's most strategic sailing base, and its charter character is firmly bareboat: sailing yachts and catamarans crewed by their own guests, supported by skippered options for those without a licence. The city sits at the mouth of one of the Adriatic's densest island clusters, which is why most charters start just outside it. The dominant base is D-Marin Dalmacija at Sukosan, Croatia's largest marina with roughly 1,200 sea berths, about 7 km south of town and only around 15 minutes from Zadar Airport. Alternatives include the centrally located Marina Zadar with its waterfront restaurants and casino, the smaller D-Marin Borik a kilometre from the old town, and the busy charter marinas around Biograd na Moru and Sukosan.
The cruising grounds are exceptional. The Zadar archipelago alone holds 24 larger islands and some 300 islets, and just 13 NM from Marina Dalmacija lies Kornati National Park, the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean. A realistic one-week route runs roughly 115-130 NM at an easy four to five hours of sailing a day: Sukosan to Veli Iz, on to Dugi Otok and the sheltered Telascica bay with its Mir salt lake and dramatic cliffs, into Kornati for Piskera or Lavsa, across to Zut, then back via Murter or Vrgada and the inner islands of Pasman and Ugljan. Two-week crews can push south to Sibenik, Skradin for Krka, and Trogir.
The summer wind here is the Maestral, a thermal NW sea breeze that builds around midday, peaks at Force 3-5 in the late afternoon near 5 PM, then dies in the evening. It makes for predictable, beginner-friendly day-sailing with line-of-sight navigation and clear water. Two winds demand respect: the Bura, a cold, gusty NE katabatic off the Velebit mountains that can arrive suddenly and is for experienced crews only, and the Jugo, a warm SE wind that builds seas and rain. Always check forecasts, and treat the open seaward side of Kornati as exposed.
The season runs from April to October, peaking in July and August, with some operators sailing March through October. The sea warms from around 18-21 C in June to roughly 25 C in July and a peak of 25-26 C in August, holding above 20 C through September. Mid-summer air is hot and dry. July and August offer the warmest water but busiest anchorages and parks; May-June and September are the connoisseur's choice, with reliable Maestral, warm swimming and far more room.
Provision thoroughly before you sail, as Kornati has no shops, water or fuel and few facilities, with mooring on park concessionaire buoys or in restaurant bays. National park fees are mandatory, charged per boat per day and cheaper bought online in advance: Kornati starts at around €19.91/day for boats up to 6.99 m and scales up by length, so larger yachts pay correspondingly more, while Telascica adds its own entrance ticket. Bareboat charter requires a recognised sailing licence valid in Croatia plus a VHF certificate; otherwise hire a skipper, perhaps with a hostess or chef. Build buffer days into long routes, because a Velebit Bura can close the crossings entirely.
