Zadar County occupies northern Dalmatia and offers a sailing experience distinct from the busier Split and Dubrovnik regions to the south. The Zadar archipelago — Ugljan, Pasman, Dugi Otok, and dozens of smaller islands — spreads offshore in a protective chain, creating sheltered channels on the mainland side and open Adriatic exposure on the outer faces. The result is a versatile cruising ground where you can choose calm or adventurous sailing depending on which side of the islands you travel.
The main charter base is Marina Dalmacija in Sukosan, 8 kilometers southeast of Zadar — one of the largest marinas in Croatia with over 1.200 berths, a comprehensive boatyard, and all services. Marina Kornati in Biograd na Moru, 30 kilometers south of Zadar, is the other major departure point and a well-established charter center. Both marinas have fuel, water, provisioning nearby, and easy airport transfers (Zadar airport is 15 minutes from either location).
Zadar itself deserves a day or an evening alongside. This 3.000-year-old city sits on a peninsula jutting into the Adriatic, with Roman ruins (the Forum), Romanesque churches (St. Donatus, a 9th-century round church), and two modern installations that have become genuinely famous: the Sea Organ (perforated stone steps that play harmonics from wave energy) and the Sun Salutation (a 22-meter LED disc in the pavement that creates light patterns after dark from solar energy stored during the day). Alfred Hitchcock reportedly said Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world. The city walls quay offers alongside berthing for visitors.
From Zadar or Biograd, the Kornati archipelago is reachable in a day-sail — the northern entrance sits roughly 15-20 nautical miles from either base. This means you can combine the Kornati National Park experience (austere limestone islands, crystal water, designated moorings) with the less-visited islands of Zadar's own archipelago. Dugi Otok, the "Long Island" at 45 kilometers, is the largest in the group and hosts Telascica Nature Park on its southern tip — a deeply indented bay system with 25 coves, 160-meter cliffs on the outer face, and the warm salt lake of Mir connected to the sea through underground channels. Saharun beach on Dugi Otok's northern end is considered one of the finest sand beaches in Croatia — a perfect crescent of white sand in shallow turquoise water, accessible by boat or a rough road.
Ugljan and Pasman, the closest islands to the mainland (barely 2 nautical miles from Zadar), are connected by a bridge and offer a string of quiet harbors — Preko, Kukljica, Tkon, Nevidane — that serve as easy first-night stops or lunch anchorages. Olive oil production is a tradition on both islands, and small roadside stands sell pressed oil directly to passing boats.
Sailing conditions in the Zadar area follow the Dalmatian pattern of afternoon Maestral, but with one critical difference: the Velebit Channel between the mainland mountains and the islands can dramatically amplify the Bora wind. The Velebit range rises steeply from the coast, and cold air from the continent accelerates as it drops to sea level, producing violent gusts in the channel. During a Bora event, the Velebit Channel is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the Adriatic. Check forecasts carefully and stay behind the islands when Bora is predicted. In summer, this is rare — but it happens, and local knowledge is valuable. Water temperature reaches 25-27°C in August. Provisioning in Zadar and Biograd is excellent; island shops are limited to basics.
