Sukošan is the engine room of yacht charter in northern Dalmatia. Tucked into the sheltered Zlatna Luka bay between Bibinje and Sukošan, just southeast of Zadar, it is home to D-Marin Dalmacija (Marina Dalmacija) — the largest marina in Croatia and one of the biggest in the Adriatic, with roughly 1,200 wet berths plus several hundred dry berths. Rather than a town with competing harbours, this is effectively a single mega-base: dozens of charter fleets operate from within the marina, from bareboat sailing yachts (monohulls of 35-55 ft are the staple) to a large, modern catamaran fleet popular with families. Crewed and skippered options are common for less experienced crews, and motor yachts, cabin charters and sailing-school flotillas round out the offering. The small Marina Sukošan quay exists but is minor; Sukošan's pull is its sheer scale and convenience.
The cruising ground in front of you is among the most forgiving in the Adriatic: the island-dense Zadar archipelago, with short hops through very well-protected inner waters. Close at hand are Ugljan and Pašman (linked at the Ždrelac channel), Ošljak, Sestrunj, Iž and Rava, opening out to Dugi Otok with the village of Sali and the Telašćica Nature Park's dramatic Mir bay and saltwater lake. Beyond lies the star attraction — Kornati National Park, only about 13 NM out, with anchorages at Levrnaka, Lavsa, Žut and Piškera. A realistic 7-day loop runs around 90-100 NM: a short 10 NM shakedown to Ugljan or Sestrunj, on to Sali (~25 NM), into Telašćica and Kornati, then back via Murter, Pašman and Biograd na Moru through the inner channel. Konoba mooring buoys make overnight dining ashore easy.
The defining summer wind is the Maestral, a thermal northwesterly sea breeze that builds from around midday, peaks near 5 pm at roughly 10-18 knots, and dies in the evening — reliable, predictable, ideal afternoon sailing. Two winds demand respect. The Bura is a strong, cold, gusty northeasterly that drops off the Velebit mountains and can build fast, especially in the shoulder season and behind the Velebit channel. The Jugo is a warm, humid southeasterly that brings rain and a longer fetch. The protected inner archipelago is easy-to-intermediate and beginner-friendly with a skipper; the exposed outer Kornati steps up to intermediate when the Bura threatens. Always check the forecast.
The season runs roughly April to October. Shoulder months — April, May and October — are cooler, quieter and more prone to Bura, with sea temperatures around 18-20 °C in spring. Peak runs June through September, with the most stable Maestral, the warmest water at roughly 22-26 °C (and 28 °C-plus in shallow bays), and Saturday-to-Saturday turnarounds. September into October cools gently but still offers fine sailing for those who prefer fewer boats on the water.
Provisioning is effortless: Marina Dalmacija is open year-round, with fuel, a superyacht pier, full provisioning and motorway access — and it sits only about 5 km from Zadar Airport, served by 50-plus direct EU routes from March to October. Budget for park fees, paid per vessel and far cheaper bought online in advance; plan Kornati and Telašćica on separate days, as each carries its own ticket. Bareboat charters require the skipper to hold a recognised qualification (ICC or equivalent); if you would rather not sail, a professional skipper or a crewed yacht is straightforward to arrange. Slip the lines, clear the inner channel, and within an afternoon the bare limestone islands of the Kornati open ahead.
