Trogir sits in central Dalmatia just west of Split, and it has quietly become one of Croatia's largest bareboat hubs. The character here is overwhelmingly bareboat sailing — monohulls in the 38-54 ft range are the dominant product, with a strong catamaran presence alongside skippered and crewed options for those who would rather not handle the boat themselves. Three bases do most of the work. ACI Marina Trogir sits on Čiovo island directly across the channel from the old town and ranks among the Adriatic's best small marinas. Marina Baotić at Seget Donji, a 10-15 minute walk from town, runs a large catamaran and sailing-yacht fleet with a pool and waterfront restaurant. SCT Marina Trogir on the Seget waterfront is a full-service charter base and a common embarkation point. Best of all, Split airport sits about 5 km away — making Trogir the fastest-embarkation hub in the Split region.
Trogir shares the entire Central Dalmatia cruising ground with Split, so the islands come quickly. Šolta, Brač, Hvar, Vis, Šćedro and the Pakleni islets off Hvar Town are all within easy reach. A classic 7-day loop runs Trogir to Šolta (Maslinica or Šešula bay), on to Brač (Milna or Bol beneath Zlatni Rat), then Hvar Town with an anchor in the Pakleni islands at Palmižana. From there it pushes to Vis — Vis Town or Komiža — out to the Biševo Blue Cave and Stiniva cove, back via Stari Grad or Vrboska, and home through the Split channel. Distances are short and the run is sheltered by the island chain, making a relaxed week covering three to five islands very achievable.
The prevailing summer wind is the Maestral, a thermal NW/W sea breeze that builds late morning and dies at sunset, typically 10-18 knots and stronger where it funnels through channels. It is reliable and predictable, which makes this area genuinely beginner-to-intermediate friendly. The Bura (cold, gusty NE, abrupt around Kaštela Bay and Šibenik) and the Jugo (warm, humid SE bringing swell and rain) are mainly spring, autumn and winter features — summer crossings are generally settled. Afternoon thermals can still raise chop in open channels, so it pays to plan longer passages for the morning.
The season runs April to October. July and August are warmest, busiest and bring the most reliable Maestral; June and September are the favourite shoulder months — warm, with fewer crowds. Sea temperatures climb from around 20-22°C in June to 24-26°C in July, peaking at 25-28°C in August and holding near 24°C through September, so swimming is comfortable from June to September.
Provisioning is straightforward from the Seget marinas and Trogir itself before you slip lines. One firm rule: bareboat skippers must show a recognised sailing licence PLUS a VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC) — Croatia enforces this strictly at handover, and without both you will need to add a professional skipper. The base typically settles the per-person tourist tax (around €1.33/adult/day) and the safety-of-navigation vignette through the contract. The Biševo Blue Cave carries a paid entry of roughly €24/person in high season, accessed by an official small boat and weather-dependent. There are no national-park fees on the standard loop. Cast off from Trogir's UNESCO stone old town and you have one of the Adriatic's gentlest, most rewarding island circuits laid out ahead of you.
