Split is central Dalmatia's busiest charter hub, and its character is firmly bareboat: 30-60 ft sailing monohulls and catamarans dominate the fleet, with skippered and fully crewed options, gulet motor-sailers, and day-tour speedboat excursions filling out the rest. Most weeks begin at ACI Marina Split, set in the Baluni bay on the southwestern edge of the harbour, a short promenade walk from Diocletian's Palace and the old town, with around 350 berths, a fuel station roughly 100 m away, and full provisioning. The larger charter fleets, however, cluster around Trogir: ACI Marina Trogir sits on Čiovo island opposite the old town, while Marina Baotić (Yachtclub Seget) in Seget Donji and the vast Marina Kaštela lie minutes from Split Airport — convenient, traffic-free embarkation. Catamarans book out earliest here, so reserve peak weeks well ahead.
The cruising ground is one of the Adriatic's finest, built around the islands of Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis plus the Pakleni islets off Hvar Town. A typical round-trip week runs 140-160 nautical miles in short two-to-four-hour hops with swim stops between. From Split, sail to Milna or Bol below the Zlatni Rat cape on Brač, on to buzzing Hvar Town and the anchorages at Palmižana and Vinogradišće in the Pakleni, then across to Vis Town and Komiža. Vis is the jumping-off point for Biševo's Blue Cave (Modra špilja), about 44 nm out; you cannot take the charter yacht inside — anchor at Mežuporat and enter by licensed local tender for a per-person ticket of roughly €18-24. Stiniva cove, Budikovac lagoon and Maslinica on Šolta make natural last-night stops on the return leg.
The prevailing summer wind is the Maestral, a thermal north-westerly sea breeze that builds late morning, peaks in the early-to-mid afternoon and fades at sunset — typically 10-18 knots, stronger where it funnels through the channels. Mornings are often calm under a light Burin land breeze, so many crews motor early and sail the afternoon. Watch for the cold, gusty NE Bura (less severe here than in Kvarner but still capable of sudden shifting gusts) and the warm, rainy SE Jugo, which builds over days and raises the southern sea state. With the predictable afternoon Maestral and abundant sheltered bays, the area suits beginner-to-intermediate crews in peak summer; the open Split-Vis-Biševo channels and any Bura or Jugo onset call for early reefing and a confident skipper.
The season runs roughly April to October, with the prime window May to early October. June and September are the connoisseur's choice — warm water, reliable Maestral, fewer crowds — while July and August are peak: busiest marinas, strongest breeze, highest prices. Sea temperatures climb from the low teens in late winter to about 24-26°C in July and August, commonly 22-26°C through the swimming months and cooling into October.
Provisioning is easy at all the base marinas, and Split Airport's position between the city and Trogir makes flight access excellent. Bareboat charter requires a valid skipper licence plus VHF certificate; the crew list (eCrew), tourist tax and navigation safety vignette are normally arranged at check-in. If you do not sail, a skipper add-on or a fully crewed yacht is straightforward. Picture the afternoon Maestral filling the sails as you reach across the channel toward Vis at golden hour — that is a Split charter at its best.
