Primošten sits in central Dalmatia, on a photogenic peninsula between Šibenik and Trogir, and it has quietly become one of the most rewarding bareboat charter bases on this stretch of the Croatian coast. The dominant character here is sailing under your own command — bareboat sailing yachts and catamarans make up the bulk of the fleet, with skippered and crewed options for those without a licence, plus motor yachts and regional gulets. Most charters begin at Marina Kremik, a genuinely sheltered, fjord-like inlet a couple of kilometres south of town, with around 393 secure berths, fuel, a chandlery and 24/7 security. The small in-town quay at Marina Lučica suits an overnight or a pickup, while award-winning Marina Frapa in Rogoznica and the gateway marinas at Šibenik and Trogir work as alternate start points — all roughly 30 km from Split Airport.
The cruising grounds are the headline. From Kremik, a classic seven-day loop runs out to Kaprije or Žirje for a first anchorage (10-15 NM), then into Kornati National Park — its 89-odd islands, dramatic cliffs and glass-clear water at Žut, Levrnaka, Lavsa and Smokvica. From there, push to Telašćica bay on Dugi Otok with its salt lake, then return via Šibenik through the St Anthony Channel, with the option to run up the Krka river to Skradin for the waterfalls. The Šibenik archipelago — Zlarin, Prvić, Tijat, Kakan — fills the closing days before a final swim stop and the easy 16 NM back to Primošten.
The prevailing summer wind is the Maestral, a thermal north-westerly sea breeze that builds from late morning, peaks gentle-to-moderate around mid-afternoon and dies at sunset. It is reliable and forgiving, ideal for beginner-to-intermediate crews, and generally a touch stronger here in central Dalmatia than further north. Watch for the cold, gusty Bura from the north-east — mainly an October-to-April concern — and the warm, humid Jugo from the south-east, which brings swell and rain. Overall this is a moderate, well-sheltered area, though Kornati's open western edge can build chop in a fresh breeze.
The season runs roughly April or May through October, peaking from June to August. The sea sits near 18°C in May, climbs to 22-24°C in June and a warm 26-28°C across July and August — the hottest and busiest stretch. September holds around 25°C with thinner crowds, making it a favourite shoulder choice, before the water cools to about 21°C by October. May, June and September give the best balance of light crowds and still-good wind and water.
Provisioning is straightforward, with a market and restaurant at Kremik and full supplies in town. Bareboat charterers must hold a recognised sailing licence plus a VHF/SRC certificate and submit a crew list; if you do not sail, a professional skipper or a fully crewed boat is easy to arrange. Note the park fees — Kornati requires a per-vessel ticket priced by length, days and month (buy online to avoid the roughly 100% on-site surcharge), with separate tickets for Telašćica and Krka. It is all Croatian domestic cruising, no border crossings — just the slow turn of the peninsula's old stone town as you slip out past the Babić vineyards into open water.
