Šibenik sits in the heart of central Dalmatia, a working Croatian city reached from the sea through the narrow, theatrical St Anthony Channel (Kanal sv. Ante), slipping past the St Nicholas fortress before the harbour opens up. Its charter character is overwhelmingly bareboat sailing — monohulls and catamarans taken out by qualified skippers — though skippered yachts, crewed catamarans, traditional gulets and all-inclusive cabin cruises are all readily available. The main base is D-Marin Mandalina in Mandalina bay, the only marina in Croatia to hold five Gold Anchors, with around 429 sea berths, a 50-ton travel lift and room for yachts up to roughly 140 metres; it is home to Croatia Yachting and other fleets. Marina Solaris, within the Solaris resort just outside town, offers a smaller secondary option of about 190 berths.
The cruising grounds are exceptional: the Šibenik archipelago opens directly onto two national parks. Inshore lie car-free Zlarin, the "coral island"; Prvić, with its Faust Vrančić museum; sponge-diving Krapanj; quiet Kaprije; and outermost Žirje with its ancient forts. A realistic week from Mandalina runs roughly 120–160 NM in short, comfortable hops: Day 1 to Zlarin or Prvić Luka; Day 2 up the Krka River to Skradin for the Skradinski Buk waterfalls; Day 3 to lively Vodice or Kaprije; Day 4 to Žirje, then crossing to the Kornati; Day 5 among the bare karst islands of Kornati National Park, mooring on buoys at bays like Levrnaka or Lavsa, perhaps adding adjacent Telašćica; Day 6 to Murter; Day 7 back via Zlarin to Šibenik.
The prevailing summer wind is the Maestral, a thermal north-westerly sea breeze that builds from late morning around 11:00, peaks mid-afternoon at 10–18 knots (Force 3–4) and fades toward sunset — steady, reliable and genuinely family-friendly. The cold, gusty Bura (NE) and humid Jugo (SE) belong mainly to autumn and spring, though the Šibenik channel is noted as Bura-prone and a summer Bura, while uncommon, can arrive suddenly with strong gusts. Difficulty is easy-to-moderate: sheltered channels and short inshore hops suit beginners, but the open crossing to the outer Kornati and Žirje can turn lumpy in a fresh Maestral or any Bura, rewarding basic experience and a weather check.
The season runs roughly April to October, peaking in July and August when air temperatures sit at 28–32°C and the sea reaches 24–26°C. Shoulder months — May, June and September — bring lighter crowds and equally reliable Maestral sailing, with water around 17–18°C in spring warming to 21–22°C by June and easing to 21–23°C in September. From June onward the area suits families and longer routes; high summer is warmest and busiest, the shoulder the connoisseur's choice.
Provisioning is straightforward in Šibenik and at Vodice, a popular stop. Bareboat charter requires a recognised skipper certificate plus a VHF/radio licence and a registered crew list; if you do not hold these, a skippered or fully crewed boat is easy to arrange. Plan ahead for the parks: a Kornati daily vessel ticket, priced by boat length, is far cheaper bought in advance than from a ranger boat inside the park, where it roughly doubles, and the Krka is navigable only as far as Skradin at five knots before the park water-bus carries you to the falls. Cast off through the St Anthony Channel and Dalmatia's bare-stone islands are yours.
